RIC Meets New TSA Cargo Screening Requirements
As a result of the 9/11 Commission’s findings, a legislative mandate requires that effective February 1 2009, 50% of all cargo shipping on passenger aircraft must be screened – hand-searched or x-rayed. This is part of the US Government’s continuing efforts to improve air security by increasing cargo screening. The screening requirement only applies to cargo being shipped on passenger aircraft, not cargo being shipped on freighters. Certain carriers will not make that distinction however, because they handle cargo for both passenger and cargo aircraft through the same facilities.
Rock-It Cargo is one of only a handful of freight forwarders who have already become a Certified Cargo Screening Facility (CCSF). Rock-It has implemented the full TSA security screening procedures in our Los Angeles warehouse and is certified to pre-screen cargo and deliver it to the airlines ready for loading. This will avoid possible time delays waiting for screening by the airlines themselves. Rock-It is implementing the same procedures in its other US offices and will be pre-screening cargo in those locations in the near future. In the interim, Rock-It Cargo has made arrangements with other facilities to pre-screen our customers’ freight.
Rock-It Cargo, the air carriers and other approved screening facilities will assess a fee for all cargo being screened. Please be advised that all quotes for work after February 1, 2009 will have the applicable screening fees added.
Be advised that effective August 01, 2010 the legislative mandate will require 100% of all air cargo shipping on passenger aircraft must be screened prior to loading onboard. We will continue to update you on the evolving developments within the country’s security regulations.
