Considering how concert tour logistics demand constant communication, there's an elegant symmetry to the fact that the company responsible for keeping rock rolling all over the world actually originated with a phone call from one brother to another.
In 1974, David Bernstein, a teenager just out of high school working for his father's freight forwarding business, received a call from his brother. Joel Bernstein was photographer for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, whose world tour had just hit an obstacle. The band was bound for England, but when they arrived at the airport they realized they had more freight than they could put on the plane. They enlisted Joel's help, who called David. With the help of their father, David got CSN&Y's gear to England and their world tour started. For David Bernstein, this event also started his career in logistics for the music touring industry. Along with freight forwarding, soon he was also coordinating passenger air charters for bands like The Eagles.
The name Rock-It Cargo actually originated in England by freight forwarder Chris Wright. He also had friends in the music industry who needed freight moved. Like Bernstein, Wright saw the potential of a new industry developing.
By the mid-80s, thanks to bands like Queen-the first to stage giant productions in countries like Brazil and one of Bernstein's biggest clients in his early career-the international touring business began to grow dramatically. Bernstein was working for customs broker F. B. Vandergrift, servicing the music touring business out of that company. At that time, Bernstein and Wright were responsible for practically all the music industry business between them. In 1986, they merged; Wright continued with the name Rock-It Cargo UK while Bernstein received the rights to the name Rock-It Cargo USA.
While maintaining its dominant position in music touring, Rock-It Cargo USA has expanded into other industries, such as film and television production, fine arts, live events, and corporate tradeshows. They've also applied the knowledge capital they've gained from moving gigantic concert shows to the freight forwarding needs of heavy industry. Rock-It's Industrial Projects Team coordinates the transport of power plants, gas refineries and wind turbines with the same expertise that the entertainment division coordinates the Madonna world tour.
